Homo humans produced the first knives, which were utilised as weapons, tools, and eating utensils during prehistoric times. The Oldowon is the earliest known knife-like tool unearthed as of 2014. It was used up to 2.5 million years ago.

Originally, knives were fashioned of flint, rock, bone, and obsidian. More modern knives, as of 2014, are constructed of materials such as ceramic, iron, steel, titanium, bronze, and copper, and feature either a folding or fixed-blade design. Fixed-blade knives having no moving parts, fit inside a sheath, and are stronger. To avoid inadvertent opening or injury, folding knives have a pivot that connects the blade to the handle and a locking mechanism.
