Rene Lelievre and Roger Lemoine invented the first electric curling iron in 1959. This electric version of the curling iron was an improvement over previous versions because it prevented hair from being singed and hands or heads from being burned. It also meant that the temperature could be adjusted to make hair styling more convenient.
Hair curling irons have been used by Babylonians, Assyrians, Egyptians, and Persians throughout antiquity; however, Marcel Grateau produced the modern heated version in 1872, generating a semi-permanent wave in hair known as the Marcel Wave, which became an incredibly popular style for women. Roger Lemoine and Rene Lelievre developed on this concept by creating an electric curling iron that was more user-friendly and gentler on hair.
