The International Institute of Tattoo, or IIT, in Bryan, near Texas A&M University, is Texas’ most highly accredited tattoo school. A year-long apprenticeship programme is offered at the school, which educates prospective tattoo artists to work in or manage a professional licenced studio.

Tattooing is not commonly taught as an academic discipline in formal education facilities. Most tattoo artists receive their training through apprenticeships, such as those offered by IIT.

IIT students receive thorough training on how to use a tattoo machine and keep it in good operating order as part of their tattoo artist education. Students also learn how to construct and maintain needle bars and tubes, sterilisation equipment, aseptic processes, and the Texas Department of Health Services’ state requirements for tattoo studios. Students are taught good tattooing technique as well as how to recognise problems and correct them as soon as feasible at the course.

Each class emphasises professional ethics. A basic body piercing lesson is also available at the school. Students must attend three tattoo seminars and two tattoo conventions each year outside of class. In one of IIT’s Austin studios, students receive on-the-job training.

After the programme is completed, all equipment belongs to the student.
