A fawn or calf is the popular name for a young deer. Deer get distinct names as they become older, depending on their gender. Bucks refer to adult male deer, while does refer to female deer.
The white patches that fawns have on their backs and rumps are a frequent feature. These white dots are a protective mechanism that breaks up the deer’s body pattern, making it easier for it to blend in with the ground and evade predators. The light and dark patterns on the forest floor are generated by sunlight shining through the leaves and branches of the forest, and the white spots on the fawns’ brown coat mimic those patterns.
