A pod is a collection of pelicans. When pelicans join together to reproduce, they form colonies and usually congregate on islands.
Pelicans come in more than six different species, but they all have one thing in common. The throat pouch is a distinguishing feature of all pelicans, and it is often used to identify them. For the most part, the pouches assist them in catching fish, but different species have varied purposes for them. Pelicans are capable swimmers who prefer to fish in groups. Some pelicans dive for their meal, while others suck it up into their neck pouches.
