Male fairies are referred to simply as fairies. There are no gender differences. However, mythology claims that there are dozens of different sorts of fairies, some of whom are predominantly or totally male.
The leprechaun, also known as the clurichaun, is a masculine fairy who is connected with drinking and the pot of gold. Fear dearg, or red men, are linked to horrible practical jokes and nightmares, and a related male fairy, the redcap, is said to need to bathe in blood to survive. The brownie is a more pleasant male fairy who performs cleaning and tasks in exchange for cream.
There are also a handful of female-only fairies, such as nixies, banshees, and leanan sidhe.
