Different fluids are used in different transmission types. Manual transmissions utilize ordinary motor oil, heavyweight hypoid gear oil, or automatic transmission fluid, whereas automatic transmissions use automatic transmission fluid. The owner’s manual also specifies the type of fluid necessary. To minimize major problems, Popular Mechanics recommends changing the gearbox fluid on a regular basis.
