Medicated Vaseline, also known as Carbolated Vaseline, included phenol, an early antiseptic. The Pond’s firm stopped making Medicated Vaseline in the 1970s.
The discomfort and itching associated with common skin irritations such as burns, scrapes, and insect bites were relieved with medicated petroleum jelly containing phenol. The chemical phenol, on the other hand, is poisonous and can irritate the skin. As of 2014, J.R. Watkins Inc. sells a similar product known as Petro-carbo salve or Black Drawing salve. The medicated salve from Watkins contains 1.5 percent phenol, and the firm advises against using it on wide portions of the body.
