According to Boston.com, the average height of championship female gymnasts who have won Olympic individual all-around medals is 5 feet 1 inch tall. 78 percent of the ladies among these championship-level gymnasts are within 3 inches of being 5 feet tall.

Female gymnasts are often petite and light, allowing for an excellent strength-to-weight ratio. The diminutive stature is especially advantageous when it comes to rotating skills. Female gymnasts have broad shoulders and are often quite strong. They must also be incredibly adaptable, and many begin training as early as the age of eight to learn this skill.
