Although a theory has circulated online for years that “Costco” stands for “China Off Shore Trading Company,” the word “Costco” has no meaning. Several times, that rumour has been debunked.

Costco does not stand for anything, and it is not owned by any Chinese firms, contrary to popular belief. It, like most stores, sells Chinese-made goods. Costco, which was founded in 1976, is a membership warehouse club where clients can buy daily things in quantity at a discount. The company is still situated in Washington and is still owned and controlled by Americans.
