Have you ever wondered if different soccer leagues had different rankings? The “Football League Rankings” are exactly what they sound like: a list of professional football (or soccer) leagues around the world, along with their strength.

So, how does the process of ranking the world’s best soccer leagues work? Football League Rankings collects all of FiveThirtyEight’s club rankings, puts them into leagues, and produces what it calls “the average SPI (Soccer Power Index) and the standard deviation of the numbers,” according to the site. What’s the end result? You can see which clubs are in the bottom half of their leagues and how the leagues compare to one another.

There are a number associations in the world of men’s professional soccer that one should be aware of when it comes to teams competing worldwide, including the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

You’ve probably heard of FIFA if you’ve ever watched a World Cup match. The federation, which was founded in 1904 with the goal of providing unity among national soccer organisations, now has an amazing 209 members, rivalling that of the United Nations (UN). Every four years, the FIFA World Cup pits the qualifying national teams of countries against one another, similar to the Olympics.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the Confederation of North, Central, and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), and the Oceania Football Confederation are among FIFA’s six confederations (OFC). All of these confederations back FIFA as a whole, “without infringing on national associations’ rights.”
