The size of a television is determined by the housing that houses the screen and components. A cathode ray tube television, for example, has much greater depth than a flat-screen television.
The diagonal, corner-to-corner approach is used by manufacturers to determine the size of a television screen. The width and height of the screen are calculated differently with a 4:3 aspect ratio, resulting in screen dimensions of 44 inches wide by 33 inches tall for a 55-inch television.
A television’s total dimensions are increased by speakers and control panels. When a flatscreen television is free-standing rather than wall-mounted, the stand adds to the overall height.
