Stranded outside the mojave desert we got in touch with Fast Trac Towing in Barstow. The owner, Paul Jordan, offered a discount price for towing if we agree to have the repair done in his shop (Sales International). While I sat in the waiting room my friend talked with the mechanic and a sales associate and came to the agreement that the labor fee would be rolled into the diagnostic test. When presented with the bill (my friend was not present) I ended up paying $175.35 in labor fees alone. $85 for the diagnostics test and the rest for installing an alternator belt and one cooler hose. I didn’t know about the separate conversation between my friend and the mechanic/sales associate. Back on the road we find ourselves stranded again 200 miles from Barstow on I-15 without cell signal. The alternator belt ripped again because the alternator pulley was loose. The repair shop in UT repaired the loose pulley, put the alternator back in, put the belt back on and charged us only for one hour of labor. No diagnostics test needed. The repair time included a trip to the local AutoZone shop to get a new part. I contacted Paul Jordan via email to address this situation but got no response back from him. Only once I called him did he verify that he got my email. He insisted to address the issue over the phone – he refused to answer via email saying that he had no time for that. We feel cheated on and taken advantage of in a precarious situation. We were promised (verbally) that the diagnostic test would be part of the labor but it wasn’t. Despite being charged for the alternator diagnostics test the underlying problem was not detected and repaired. The repair did not take two hours. His repair lasted only 200 miles. We think Paul Jordan offered lower towing fees to get the repair deal as well and then recovered the lower towing fees via labor costs. Breaking down near the Mojave desert leaves you with very view choices when it comes to towing and repair shops – we certainly made the wrong one.
