SP4 was previously the fourth grade of the specialist rank in the United States Army. The name was replaced with “SPC,” which is roughly equivalent to the rank of corporal and is the only specialty level.

The nine specialty ranks were introduced to the US Army in 1955 and 1958 to offer enlisted soldiers with extensive technical skills with a comprehensive career path. Soldiers with such knowledge were more likely to be used in a technical role throughout their military careers, making them too specialised to rise through the levels of troop command. For career service, the SP ranks gave status and financial incentives. SP ranks were phased out over time and replaced with the rank “SPC.”
