The number of symmetry lines in a star is determined by the type of star. A five-pointed star has five symmetry lines. A six-pointed star, on the other hand, has six lines of symmetry.

A symmetry line is an imaginary line along which one can fold an image or object so that both parts are identical. There are five of these lines in a five-pointed star. These symmetry lines can be discovered by drawing a line from the top of each of the five points to the opposite side. The two halves of the star created in each case are symmetrical.
