The body can take anywhere from one to four hours to metabolise sugar, depending on the type; nevertheless, blood sugar can start to climb within 20 minutes of consumption, according to Aglaee Jacob of SFGate. Glycemic index foods have a reduced impact on blood sugar levels.

During digestion, both carbs and starches are converted to simple sugars. According to Jacob, eating a well-balanced meal with proteins, fibre, and healthy fats can delay the rate at which blood sugar rises because these foods take longer to digest.

According to the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Publications, people with diabetes must be extra aware of their sugar intake since their bodies do not manufacture insulin to assist regulate blood glucose levels in the same way that a “normal” person’s body does.
