Depending on the severity of the condition, prune juice takes a variable amount of time to treat constipation. According to Total Health, prune juice starts functioning within an hour and can take an hour, six hours, a week, or many weeks to help a slow bowel.

Prunes are high in sorbitol and fibre, both of which are powerful stool-loosening stimulants that reduce stool transit time and so relieve constipation. To avoid overconsumption, a serving of juice should pass through the intestines before any extra amounts are consumed. According to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, a sudden increase in prune juice might increase the time it takes to pass the colon and cause other unpleasant side effects like diarrhoea, cramps, and digestive pain.
