Difference stores have different policies regarding stealing, and places like Walmart and 7-Eleven have their rules regarding stealing. Let us look at your chances of getting caught after leaving the store.

How is stealing classified if it is done in Walmart or places like 7-Elevens?

Stealing is a very immoral offence, and you should never do it regardless of how or what your circumstances are. But if you are caught stealing in Walmart or places like 7-Elevens, you would have to pay a hefty price with either your life (jail) or money.

These rules are dependent upon the value of the material that you stole, and most of the time you would get a slap on your wrist. But to qualify to just get a slap on your wrist, it should be something like a chocolate or a packet of bread.

Walmart even has a rule that if you are caught stealing something and it is below the price range of $25, you would be heavily lectured on the consequences of stealing, and you are advised to leave whatever you stole. Sometimes, you are even banned from the store.

However, if you stole something between the price range of $25 to $1,000, it would be very severe. Charges might be placed on you, and you would even be jailed for stealing. If you’re seen stealing anything between $25 and $1,000, you should accept whatever you did and bear the consequences for the same.

However, if you are caught stealing something in the range of $1,000, it is classified as a class six felony, and you would be charged heavily regarding the same.

Is it possible that the cops would be involved, if you are caught stealing?

As mentioned above, depending upon the type of theft, and the value of the material that you tried to steal, you would be persecuted accordingly. Therefore you should be very careful with theft, and it is always advisable to not steal anything.

But if you are caught stealing while in the act of trying to leave the stores there are persecution officers that are available at these shopping malls that would detain you.

Walmart and other malls such as 7-Elevens, and the Dollar Store would even persecute you regarding theft. You might be handed over to the official jurisdiction immediately, or after being detained for 15 minutes.

Would I be caught after running away from shoplifting?

There are various ways that you can be caught after shoplifting. There have been many incidences where attorneys have shared that their clients were sued after weeks or days of shoplifting.

The most common type of process by which you can get caught stealing is through security cameras. In this modern time and age, it is very irresponsible and foolish for the shops to not have security cameras at every place.

So, even if you steal something and you run away, chances are that your face might be trapped in the camera. You might be identified later by using facial recognition software by the police.

If for some reason you are not caught by your face, there are 100 per cent chances of having a security camera in the parking lot. Once you drive away, your registration plate would be captured, and the number would run through software and you would be identified within minutes.

Yes, Walmart and other places like 7-Elevens would even press hefty charges on you, regarding theft and it depends upon the owners. There are various anti-theft policies available in these stores, but a majority of them would resort to professional help rather than giving a slap on the wrist.

Would these shops send the police over to your house?

It is fairly possible that if you are caught stealing something in the range of $25, you would be charged with theft. If you are charged with theft, then it might be the work of the store that you stole from, to report you.

But no these stores can send the police to your house. Yes, they might report you, and provide every evidence of you regarding theft, but they cannot send the police to your house directly by themselves.

You can also rest assured that these shopping malls like 7-Elevens and Walmart do not have any facial recognition software that they can use to target you.

What are the chances of getting caught while stealing, and can they detain you?

According to the statistics conducted by the US government, about 45 billion dollars are spent every year in inventory management for the retail industry. Among the sales that happen, 1.2 billion dollars are lost to theft from these retail stores.

It is even concluded in a study that 1 out of 48 shoplifters are persecuted, and this is not an encouraging factor to steal. The most important factor to notice is where you are stealing from. Most of the time, these security cameras present in the aisle or above the racks, are just for namesake.

You cannot be caught with these cameras, as they are installed to instil fear amongst customers. But if you have something and somehow you make it go across the checkout point, it would be possible for you to take it home. As for detaining yourself regarding theft, there are certain rules which are different for different malls.

Usually, if you go to Walmart and other famous malls, there are detaining officers available at the store that would keep you inside the store for a reasonable amount of time. They are not allowed to inflict any physical damage, and you’re entitled to ask for a lawyer.
