People who suffer from gout should avoid beets. Beets contain oxalate, a chemical that contributes to gout, along with spinach, almonds, rhubarb, chocolate, wheat bran, beans, strawberries, and black tea. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, avoiding beets is a good idea for persons with gout.
The discomfort associated with gout is caused by uric acid accumulation in the joints. As the acid crystallises, it expands into the joint, putting pressure on the joint and causing pain. According to Merck Manuals, calcium oxalate can create crystals that work in the same way, which is why beets (and other foods containing oxalate) are not a good food for gout sufferers.
Because calcium oxalate crystals can harm connective tissue and tendons, they generate discomfort similar to that caused by uric acid in gout. Gout sufferers should avoid red meats, processed meals, and any foods strong in purines, which are found in beef, sweetbreads, mussels, and mackerel, in addition to oxalate-containing foods. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, adding foods strong in magnesium but low in calcium, such as rye, soy, oats, corn, and avocado, is an excellent method to supplement a vital mineral while reducing gout pain.
